Traditionally, downtown was for business; not many people lived there. However, here, as with many otheraspects of Dallas, old rules no longer apply. Dallas has attracted numerous corporate headquarters relocations, for lots of reasons It's in the middle of the country, it's got a world-class airport, housing is very affordable, it's got great weather for most of the year and?..on and on.

Among all of the newcomers, many are dyed-in-the-wool urbanites. They want to live and work in the same neighborhood. Dallas has responded to this demand by building over 5000 housing units in the Central Business District. By 2020, over 20,000 residents will live downtown.

Old and new form an energetic blend downtown. Downtown is the home of one of the most famous stores in the world, Neiman Marcus. Its flagship 1920's store and corporate headquarters are still on Main Street. The Arts District will be over 90% complete in 2009. A six-acre deck park over Woodall Rodgers Freeway, the highway that separates downtown from Uptown, will also be compete by 2011.

On the south side of downtown, the Cedars neighborhood has emerged as a cool place for trendsetters to live. Matthews Southwest is building a 10-story condominium tower that will be ready for occupancy in late 2008. Pricing for the one- and two-bedroom plans ranges from $150,000 to $350,000, a great value for a skyline view. There are plenty of downtown dallas lofts for sale.

The housing stock downtown has been primarily rental, but there are several conversions of old buildings that offer condominium residences. These include Soco Lofts and 1505 Elm. These conversions either tend to be loft-like or redos of streamlined mid-century structures. On the east side of town, Deep Ellum has a wide range of condominium lofts, often created out of early 20th century warehouses. With the completion of One Arts Plaza, the luxurious new mixed-use project in the Arts District, downtown?s profile as a residential neighborhood has been raised still further.

Downtown Dallas has become a thriving place to live as well as work. Residences are available in loft conversions, apartments, luxury town homes or upscale condominium towers. Downtown Dallas is also where you will find the largest urban arts scene in the United States. The most significant performing arts complex to be built since Lincoln Center in New York, the Dallas Center for the Performing Arts will showcase music, opera, theater and dance when it opens in 2009.
